The certificate covers a wide range of subjects including domicile and residence, intestacy rules and the importance of making a will, making best use of Inheritance Tax (IHT) exemptions and reliefs, options for mitigating IHT, different types of trusts including taxation and duties of trustees, options for making changes after death as well as using powers of attorney.

The exam used a case study approach to apply the learning in a practical way. As well as increasing knowledge and understanding of the legal and tax factors of estate planning, it is helpful in taking a holistic and integrated approach to planning, in particular in conjunction with client’s solicitors.
