Elderly disadvantaged

We had yet another case this week of an elderly person being discharged from hospital after an illness, who was no longer capable of looking after herself, but who was not – as the rules require – given a needs assessment by social services.

In this case, as in so many similar ones, the result is distress for relatives, confusion, difficulty in arranging residential care and almost certainly – if our adviser hadn’t been involved – financial cost to the family.

This is just part of the acknowledged crisis in care provision, and while there’s nothing we can do about that, our advisers can help to sort out the finances properly, especially for residential care, where the eligibility rules for financial support are, to say the least, confusing.
